Joe Casabona recently was featured at our Third Thursday meetup on February 17th, 2022. His planned-for-live presentation, “Building Your Own Platform as a Creator”, was interrupted by illness, so he provided us with a pre-recorded presentation entitled “How to Successfully Promote and Market Membership Sites” which was along the same lines as the originally planned one. The full video is embedded below.
ABOUT THE PRESENTATION
If you’re now thinking of launching your own course or membership, there are a few things you need to think about to be successful. Number One: build your audience. In this presentation, Joe Casabona covered how to successfully promote and market membership sites.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Don’t let Joe Casabona’s Master’s Degree in Computer Science intimidate you; he is not only an approachable guy but a born teacher.
Joe started his career almost 20 years ago as a freelance web developer before realizing his true passion, which is sharing his years of knowledge about website development, podcasting, and course creation to help creators, freelancers, and business owners. Joe has a gift for breaking down concepts that scare people into bite-sized, approachable pieces of information they can implement in a matter of days.
Joe’s career trajectory includes 20+ years of experience building websites, 16+ years using WordPress, 11+ years teaching at the college level, and 7+ years podcasting, plus he is the author of four books, including his latest: HTML and CSS: Visual QuickStart Guide.
When he’s not creating courses for LinkedIn Learning, you can find Joe spending time with his family, enjoying baseball, or talking too much about Star Wars.

Q&A with Joe Casabona
Here are the questions that were submitted prior to the original presentation as well as the answers Joe provided via email to share them with participants.
Jaren asks: Is there a formula for success and if so what is it?
Joe Casabona: I think that depends on the creator and what your goals are. Some would say I’m not successful because I don’t make millions, but I get to spend time with my family when I want to. You need to define what success looks like for you, and define a plan to get there.
Kris asks: I come from years of using Squarespace but want more control over managing a member’s area on the site with subscriptions. Curious about what the best but simplest solutions are with WordPress?
Joe Casabona: My favorite is Restrict Content Pro (full disclosure: they have sponsored my podcast). I think it’s an elegant, clear solution that’s easy to implement, and quite affordable. That’s what I used for my podcast membership, before moving to LearnDash, which has built-in control over courses.
Shelby asks: How did you start? What was your greatest challenge?
Joe Casabona: If we’re talking about WordPress, my friend Stephen Mekosh introduced it to me in 2004. My biggest challenge then was finding good learning resources to do things the right way. As a podcaster / content creator, I know “just start” is a lame answer, but it’s the truth. The biggest challenge is not falling into the trap of “I need to publish every day.” Be consistent, but don’t burn yourself out.
Brandon asks: What’s the fastest way from 0 to 10,000 fans across platforms?
Joe Casabona: Start with 1 platform (the one where your target audience hangs out), and start with 100. Get 100 true fans and they will help spread the word. Oh, and no matter what platform you’re working with, definitely build your email list.
Thanks again to Joe for the recorded presentation. We’ll be sure to schedule him for another one sometime later this year.
